How are products tested for IP Rating

In previous title we have shared what are the IP Ratings and how to choose the rating for your products.
When designing the products, we need to test them to ensure that the products would pass the rating following the IEC529 standard. The IEC 529 (BSEN60529:1991) standard is came up with by International Electro-technical Commission (IEC), a globally recognized international standards and conformity assessment organization, to define adequate protection of enclosures against the ingress of dust or water.
At YIS Marine we only make products of IPX5, IPX6, IPX7 & IPX8 rating, and we tested them mostly internally under the following standards:

  • IPX5 or IP55 – Water Jet Test: a bronze nozzle is placed 3 meters away from the subject, shooting 12.5L/mins (750L/h) of water toward the subject for at least 3 mins. Subject is placed on a rotating platform to ensure water jet is shot at all possible angles. Limited water ingression is allowed, and no product malfunctions should be found on subject after the test.
  • IPX6 or IP66 - Strong Water Jet Test: a bronze nozzle is placed 3 meters away from the subject, shooting 100L/mins (6,000L/h) of strong water jet toward the subject for at least 3 mins. Subject is placed on a rotating platform to ensure water jet is shot at all possible angles. Limited water ingression is allowed, and no product malfunctions should be found on subject after the test.
  • IPX7 or IP67 – Temporary Water Immersion Test: Place subject inside a water tank with water of at least 1 meter deep for at least 30 mins. The bottom of the subject has to be at least 1 meter deep under water surface and the top of the subject should at least be 15cm under water surface. Limited water ingression is allowed, and no product malfunctions should be found on subject after the test.
  • IPX8 or IP68 - Protected against continuous water submersion: Place subject inside a (pressured) water tank with water of at 1 meter deep for at least 24 hours. YIS Marine current does not do IP68 tests internally so IP68 tests shall be performed by 3rd party labs should it be required by our customers.
